Jumbo: How to Fishbrain - Trick Tips

Jumbo: how to fishbrain - Trick Tips. “It’s the little things that make a big difference”. I’ve been talking about making this fishbrain video for years. There’s so many different elements to this trick that make it hard to perfect, but they’re unsung. A proper fishbrain is something we take for granted. It’s the go-to trick for almost every photo.

Jumbo: How to Fishbrain - Trick Tips

It’s more complicated than it looks. I discuss it in the video, so I won’t rant about it here, but with every fishbrain there’s at least 8-10 different movements that have to go right for it to work out. I did forget to bring up not to hang your non-grinding foot below the ledge. I’m bummed about that. Big thank you to Anthony Medina for helping me out. As I mentioned in the video, you need to be able to do most of the basic forwards soul tricks before learning this. I would also learn an easier topside trick before fishbrain. - Cody Sanders.

Jumbo: Inspin & Outspin - Tutorial +

If you followed my channel before it was called Jumbo, you’ll know one of the things I was interested in doing was making how-to videos. I always felt like there was way more to skating than was being shown to beginners and I wanted to try and give those ideas a home. I was only able to get through about 5 of the instructional videos before an old lingering knee injury took me out of the game for a couple of years. A blessing in disguise I guess, because being hurt inspired me to create Jumbo. But Now that I can skate again, I want to keep the idea alive.

Jumbo: Inspin & Outspin - Tutorial +

When I get interested in something, I’ll spend waaay too much time learning about. Learning about all the little technical differences in this or that. I’m that way with most of my hobbies outside of skating. I know I’m not the only one that thinks that way and since there are so many newcomers to skating lately, I think it’s important to clearly define what we’re doing.

It might have been documented somewhere a long time ago, in an old magazine or VHS tape that’s in someones closet collecting dust. So I think it’s worthwhile to put these ideas on the internet so we can actually talk about them. Anywho, I do a lot of this off the top of my head. So if you’re watching it and thinking “ah, he should have mentioned ’this/that’”, you’re probably right. Like I say at the end, thank you to everyone that supports Jumbo. You’re all cool as hell. More to come. - Cody Sanders.

Danny's Point: How to Grind | Rollerblade (2022)

In this episode of Danny’s Point we join Danny Aldridge on a beautiful day at the skatepark to learn the basics of grinding on inline skates. When you have mastered the basics of inline skating you might find yourself adventuring into the skate park or streets. Here you’ll see other skaters sliding across handrails or ledges. This movement is called grinding, and, done correctly, grinding makes you feel like you are floating.

Cody Sanders - Rollerblading Tutorial Plus: X-Grind

Cody Sanders - Rollerblading Tutorial Plus: X-Grind

For people that don’t want the banter, the actual tutorial starts at 5:00. I found out the hard way that I’m not nearly as good at X-grinds as I thought I was, haha. This one was fun to make, I had all my friends at the session with me. But it’s definitely hard to think critically about tricks whenever everyone at the session is messing with you.

Cody Sanders - Rollerblading Tutorial Plus: X-Grind

I tried my best. As usual, the points I delivered don’t encompass the full scope of “X-grinds,” but I think it’s more than anything that’s been put out prior sooo… Good enough! I thought that I had gotten all of the versions of x-grinds on film, but as I went back and re-watched the footage, a lot of the ones that were landed weren’t good examples of the trick.

I want these videos to put the best foot forward (no pun intended), to really show what the trick should look like when done well. Since I had all the boys with me, we just started sessioning normally. A lot of the clips we had, we didn’t slide the whole ledge, we landed a little neutral, etc… So I thought to myself, “alright, no problem. There’s an easy looking ledge down the street, I can just ask Caleb to help me re-film it”. Well… As easy as that spot looks, there’s giant cracks on the ground, you can only approach it from one direction (the hard direction, for me) and it was an absolute disaster..

So I’m sticking with the box footage! Haha! But, all of that aside, as I say in the video, we can’t get it right all the time. So cut my actual physical ability some slack on this one, I’m just working with what I’ve got. I hope you are too! Thanks for watching. Love y’all. - Cody Sanders.
