Written and directed by industry pioneer Arlo Eisenberg, edited by rollerblading’s most influential filmmaker Joe Navran (FOR II, Elements, Coup De Tat) and produced by Mindgame’s Shane Coburn, “What Do You Believe In?” set out to completely re-imagine what a rollerblading video could be.

“What Do You Believe In?” features five of the brightest stars in rollerblading: Brian Shima, Jon Elliott, Josh Petty, Rachard Johnson, and Jaren Grob. The video focuses on their skating, which is some of the best ever captured on film, but it is complemented by a surreal story line which weaves in and out of their sections.

“What Do You Believe In?” is not a narrative story in the conventional sense, nor is it a standard skate video neatly divided into rider’s sections. It is a low budget, experimental, artistic interpretation of skating that does not merely break all of the rules but seems to be completely unaware of them altogether.

The skating alone would rank “What Do You Believe In?” among the best videos ever made, but add to that its artistic vision and its fearless conviction to add something completely new to the rollerblading landscape and what you’ve got is an instant classic. “What Do You Believe In?” is a landmark video and a must have for any rollerbladers collection.

Some might argue that this word is pronounced as X-eS-jay-dough. To the Blader’s that know, this word is a progressive way to pronounce Shadow. Like this brand’s name, it represents in many ways the culture that this company is all about.

Shane Coburn, an inline skating guru, enjoyed snowboarding during the winters. After accidentally picking up a snowboard binding that got mixed into a box of inline skates while looking for a pair of cuffs, the idea of marrying a cuff to the boot was burned into his brain. He added an inline frame and the product was generations in advance.

Coburn, working for Senate wheels at the time, went off to do his own wheel project called Medium. From here he met Dustin Latimer, arguably one of the best Professional Blader’s that ever existed, and they began to develop a revolutionary wheel company called, Mindgame. Meanwhile, Coburn continued to try and find the right place and timing for this new skate product he had in mind and soon connected with another outdoor sports manufacturer, Salomon.

With Dustin Latimer’s Blading being generations ahead of its time, he was very helpful in engineering a new inline skating product that provided an all new experience. The design was to have the skater attached to the soul, providing better mobility. Along with another Professional Blader that was ahead of his time, Chris Farmer, they were able to demonstrate the ninja capabilities with these new skates that attached to your shoes, we call Footwraps.

Salomon later moved out of the Inline outdoor activities, with Coburn and Latimer retiring soon after, and handed the technology to Powerslide whom continues to make Xsjado Skates today. Mike Obedoza now overlooks the brand for Powerslide and with Chris Farmer, continues to support the offspring from these pioneers that are the most progressive Street Blader’s in Blading today.

I have been shooting for Black Market II : Barely Dead for a little over a month so far. This new flick is a documentary about the history of skating. Featuring interviews with Arlo Eisenberg, Mike Opalek, Jess Dyrenforth, Jon Elliott, Brian Shima, Chris Haffey, Shane Coburn + more!

All the skating content is shot on super 16mm motion picture film. Below are a few still frames from my recent California trip. These are freeze frames from the film transfer to HDCAM 1920×1080 10-bit uncompressed files… I have cut the file size to 50% of those dimensions so that they will be visable on your monitors.

Just remember… still frames don’t do much justice for how smooth & organic the film looks in motion! Also, all these shots were filmed at 48fps… so they are all true slow-motion… - Doug Urquhart.
